At least 10 COVID-19 vaccines are currently in the final phase of their trials, where the vaccine is given to thousands of people to test its safety and efficacy. But as the quest for a coronavirus vaccine continues, experts say there’s still an issue with how diverse these trials are, which could impact how effective a vaccine is for everyone....

As the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention repeatedly assure the public that the COVID-19 vaccine will be safe, indications that the review process may be undercut by politics has turned off people in minority communities to getting the vaccine when it becomes available — worrying physicians that communities disproportionately devastated by the pandemic are most at risk of being left out of immunization efforts....

Many thousands of volunteers from minority groups are needed for huge clinical trials underway or about to begin. Scientists say a diverse group of test subjects is vital to determining whether a vaccine is safe and effective for everyone and instilling broad public confidence in the shots once they become available....

Dr. Elizabeth Burnside and Dr. Jomol Mathew, who are both part of the All of Us Research leadership team at UW-Madison, recently received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) award for a project that will provide the first opportunity at UW to leverage real-time clinical data for research and contribute to the new National #COVID19 Cohort Collaborative, which aims to answer critical research questions to address the pandemic....
